Closing the Door on the NHL Season

Spirits were high in Chicago after the Blackhawks halted a 48 year old curse

Well, they did it. Last Wednesday the Blackhawks ended a 47 season Stanley Cup drought by beating the Flyers in overtime.

It's easy to write about the Blackhawks and their well deserved celebrations (and hangovers that followed) but here at WMBC we like the losers better. So my apologies to the Blackhawks' fans, but this ones going to be about the Flyers.

Although this is tough for the Flyers' players, who ended the season with a whole lot of what they didn't want, this sucks for the Flyers' fans so much more (which is why they've rocketed up to the top of my Cursed Power Rankings and bumped off the Rangers, who can now finally enjoy their offseason activities). That's why below I've outlined the three reasons the Flyers' fans could feel cursed:

1) They have now gone 35 years since a Stanley Cup Championship

The most obvious reason still hurts. A lot. Generational measaures are a pretty good way to size up just how long a franchise has gone since its last championship, and it's been a while when you get to the point where you can start telling your kids "Well, I never saw us win a championship live, but your grandfather did."

2) They have lost 6 Stanley Cup Championships since winning their last one

As I mentioned in a post way back, while it's one thing to just think "Wow, my team is just hands down terrible, always has been, always will be," it hurts exponentially more when your team gets you so close before giving it away.

3) They lost the series at home

Not only did they subject their fans to another Stanley Cup Finals loss, they did so at home. They haven't done this to their fans since their first loss in 1976 (to be fair, they did the same thing to Sabres' fans in 1975). Letting your fans down softly in the comfort of their homes or local bars watching it on TV is one thing, but making them watch it in person is heart wrenching.

No worries though, Flyers' fans. Although I'm sure you have at least thought the four words this blog is named after, don't forget those four other words that often follow "we must be cursed."

"There's always next year."
