Quick hits from around the sports world for your afternoon delight. Estimated reading time: approximately 11 hours, 5 minutes

History Made at Wimbledon

Nope, this has nothing to do with any of the usuals. Don't know if any of you were watching Wimbledon over the past three days, but today John Isner finally defeated Nicolas Mahut in the longest match at Wimbledon ever. The match was called due to darkness two straight nights and lasted 3 days, 183 games, and 980 points. Unfortunately, due to this match being between the 23rd ranked player in the world and the 149th ranked player in the world, it will go the way all other insane sports records go (Quickly, who can tell me the only major league baseball player to hit two grand slams in the same inning off the same pitcher? Can you name the pitcher too?), and due to that we say...

Italy and France ousted in 2010 World Cup

What a difference 4 years makes! Joining eliminated France, Italy was knocked out of the World Cup after a 3-2 loss to Slovakia today. This marks the first time in the history of the World Cup that both the winner and runner up of a World Cup have been eliminated in the next World Cup's group stage (Italy and France played each other in the finals of the 2006 World Cup). Then again, I'm pretty sure most of the readers here are concerned more about another team in the World Cup that just so happened to win its group (Booooooyah), so for that we can all say...

R.A. Dickey keeps on shining

In his 7th start, R.A. Dickey stayed hot against the Tigers, throwing 8 innings of scoreless baseball and only failing to pitch a complete game so that Mets closer K-Rod could get in some much needed work (what a teammate). Dickey is now 6-0 with a 2.33 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. Better still, he's got 35 strikeouts and only 14 walks... as a knuckleballer. A hard thrower out of college, Dickey's career turned south after shoulder trouble early on. Now at 35, he's got a new chance pitching for the Mets (throwing 80 mph knuckleballs with precision like a marksman), and we here at WMBC love comeback stories. Unfortunately, he's playing for a team on one hell of a hot streak, so that's all she wrote on that topic.

Anything else to talk about in other news?
